Character Name: Brietta Sullivan
Source: Original Character
Personality:
Outwardly, Brietta gives off the appearance of being shy, introverted, innocent, and downright sweet. This is the side of her nature that is most in keeping with her true self however being an avid opportunist; she oftentimes uses this impression to her strategic advantage. Conversely, she can be a tad on the manipulative, cunning side but rarely if ever is her intent wholly malicious. Self-preservation is her prime motivation, although her innate curiosity is also a deciding factor in her actions, and words.
With her comes a slew of baggage that she has no desire in divulging ergo she finds opening up to others difficult and taxing on the system. Once she warms up to someone she can be quite caring and compassionate but socially awkward, unsure how to properly interact with others, comfort her friends in their times of need or even convey or accept compliments, or advice. Despite her defensive behavior there are times when she can be downright naïve, taking people for their face value even though they may in actuality be lying to her. In this regard it should be noted that Brietta holds a weakness for well-dressed individuals, or those who carry themselves with remarkable dignity and poise. Those people embody the traits she herself wishes to emulate, despite her humble beginnings, and she will try her hardest to mask her past.
She was blessed with a natural talent for magic, which she has adapted and used for her own benefit. Magic is in essence her life. It's the one thing that has always been there for her. She has an interest in all forms of magic but primarily her focus is on magical items. If she feels someone doesn't hold enough respect for magic she feels that they are beneath her.
A more recent development in her character is regret. Now that she’s getting older, and more notably in hiding, she’s finding fault with her old way of living. This leads to feeling even more self-conscious than usual and increased indecision.
Her strengths lie in defensive magic, and thievery. Her weaknesses are her indecision, her lack of understanding about human nature, and her own sense of pride and stubbornness. If she needs help, she will deny it and try to fumble through the situation herself. She has a love of magical items, ruins, and ancient artifacts and most notably runes which she carries a set with her at all times.
[The following relates more specifically to her time spent at Polymagic U]
Upon her arrival at Polymagic U she never intended to get that close to anyone. She always tried to keep her distance and keep more to herself but her curious nature more or less forced her to bend her own set rules. The reasons she did not want to form any connections is in part because she didn’t want anyone to learn of her shady career, to pass judgment on her, and in part because she feared that if she did form those bonds she would endanger those people. Never before had she seen such a collection of supernatural beings and creatures and she enjoyed getting to learn more about them. Her ignorance on such subjects kept her from having been exposed to the more traditional stereotypes and biases in magical society. For example, demons or half demons tended to be a source of contention in magical society and there was some controversy on whether or not they should be allowed to attend the school. Brietta, while a bit leery of the title “demon” didn’t hold any great loathing for the creatures and actually felt more of a connection to the half demons than regular humans.
Relationship wise there was only one person Brietta couldn’t stand at the school. A wizard that tended to talk about woman in crass terms and had no qualms promoting his drivel to the community at large. That’s not to say she never had any issues with the other students she just ended up having more respect for them then she might openly admit. A prime example of this is Charles Carrol. Charles was a very studious person devoted to the field of criminal justice. His desire to stop criminals obviously set the thief at odds with him right from the start but then she also would get irritated by his desire to have everything “just so”. Like he believed she should reside in the dorms like a normal person and she thought otherwise (which actually turned in her favor later). The two often teased one another in a slightly more competitive way. Conversely, she did think he was intelligent and was a very caring brother for Holly Carol.. and in fact liked him as a person. Holly Carrol held a great enthusiasm for magic and was a prodigy in the arts herself. Brietta certainly took a liking of her swiftly do to this passion and they became good friends. Brietta however would never confide her secrets in the young girl who had a tendency to experiment and get into plenty of mischief all on her own. The two often went on investigations together. Basically, she is leery of those who are either in or seeking a position in criminal justice, is more accepting of those who show a real love for the magical arts and she detests those who objectify women. Even if she doesn’t approve of what someone has said or done she rarely confronts them about it and when she does it is understated. She’s not a very confrontational person.
She did manage to fall for one of the other students, even though she was in denial about it for some time. Sebastian Claves, one of the resident half demons, had been so kind to her and made such an impression on her when she arrived that she found herself paying him more attention than the others right from the start. As her intrigue grew she realized all too late that she had developed feelings for him. Brietta is quite shy in regards to dating or related topics, and is really quite clueless on the subject. So when she became interested in Sebastian she wasn’t sure what to do or if she even should try to start a relationship. He came from a rich family and she was an orphan that stole for a living. She was a human (as far as she knew) and he was a half demon.. It didn’t exactly seem like a fitting match to her and she doubted that he’d want anything to do with her. If it hadn’t been from the urging from Professor Ash.. Who had managed to see what was going on she might not have ever asked Sebastian to go anywhere. The problem being… his family was throwing the gala she’d invited him too and she decided it would be a good idea to lift a few items from the guests. Sebastian needless to say had found out about it and addressed it right away.. Brietta had never felt so embarrassed or ashamed for her actions and feared that she might have ruined everything. This was really one of the first times she could see first hand how her thievery affected other people, and the event was so jarring that it is one of the reasons she questions whether or not she should continue to be a thief at all.
Luckily for her, this event did not completely shatter her friendship with Sebastian, he didn’t even tell anyone else about the incident. The feelings by the end of the game seemed like they might have been mutual but neither one came right out and admitted it.
Guest Lecturer Ash is probably the person she felt the most respect for and whom she sort of looked up to. In many ways Ash seemed like just one of the gang but her experience and knowledge placed her in a different category all together. Brietta admired how many hardships the other had faced and made it through. Ash, being a former convict on parole, also made it seem like Brietta could be a little more open about her lifestyle and at least go so far as to ask for advice. Unfortunately, she never did have the stomach for the class Ash taught (Forensic Necromancy) and never really learned anything from the assignments.
It should be noted that Brietta believed herself to be a human who just happened to be able to use magic and doesn’t really have a high opinion of herself.
History/Pull Point:
Brietta’s earliest memories come from her life on the street as a child. Without any recollection of her parents (as she was quite young at the time) Brietta bares resentment toward them for abandoning her, whether they left her intentionally or not is an issue that although she may deny it is of great importance to her. In order to survive she had to rely on her wits and magic alone, refusing any an all offered assistance along the way. For basic necessities she turned toward a life of crime, namely thievery. It was during this period where she grew dependent on magic, and took a noticeable interest in magical items themselves. Rather than just stealing for profit, although profit is also important, she began stealing magical items, learning about them, how they worked, how to use them, and how to make them. As time progressed Brietta made some connections in the criminal underworld, sellers in the black market and the occasional accomplice. She adopted the surname of Sullivan, as a matter of convenience. Rarely can one accomplish business or fit in society with no family name.
After a particularly successful, yet dangerous heist the young thief went into hiding. Fearing her identity had been revealed, she couldn’t afford to risk capture. Seeking refuge in a magical school seemed the only logical solution. Magical schools are well known for possessing a variety of built in defenses that would discourage most opponents from daring to extradite a person by usual means. The mark himself was also involved in nefarious dealings and therefore would not opt to publicly report the theft lest drawing attention to his own misdeeds.
She attended Polymagic university, refraining from mentioning her questionable history. She has since been having doubts as to her own moral and ethical standards, due in part to the people she befriended here. She’s unsure how to move forward in her life. Certainly, she was a curious student, but hesitant to draw any attention to herself, preferring to keep a low profile and refraining from being overly active in her classes. Not to say that she didn’t love learning, she most assuredly does enjoy learning, especially about magic.
[Below here it goes into pure previous game canon]
Even though she was attending Polymagic, she never really went to the trouble of filling out paperwork for it, paying for it, or even living on campus. She was always expecting to be booted out at some point or another but the occasion never arose. She instead resided in the woods around the school that were believed to be haunted. Though she never would reveal precisely where she lived it became a sort of area of contention between herself and Charles Carroll (Who somewhat ironically was working toward becoming a member of a law enforcement agency). When she arrived at Polymagic the school was embroiled in some unique circumstances. A number of students were disappearing while the number of squirrels around the school were increasing.
Whatever was transpiring resulted in the Offensive Magic building being closed down while the anomalies were put under further investigation. The student body, as well as some of the staff couldn’t remain idle during the whole affair and eventually began snooping for clues around the building and campus. No one was certain if they were making any headway until goons dressed all in black infiltrated the school and were going around threatening and coercing anyone involved to cease they’re involvement. Since they only raided the dorms this left Brietta free to help anyone who needed it in the aftermath and kept her out of harms way.
One professor, Professor Ash a guest lecturer as it were, got too close to the truth as well and spontaneously went missing. She’d managed to leave more clues on her laptop which directed everyone back to the Offensive magic building. In an effort to rescue her, the students banded together to break into the said building. There they found the makings of a great experiment to transform large expanses of people into harmless little squirrels. They also found the professor already “squirrelified” but did manage to rescue her and eventually turn her back to normal. Ash’s wand however was left in the building.. And Brietta would be the one to go and retrieve it for her with an unlikely accomplice. Although the true intent behind the weapon remained a mystery it was revealed that the Headmaster was involved and was removed from the school after the affair hit public light.
After that ordeal the school settled down for a extensive period of time. Hopes were high that there wouldn’t be another event like the one before it. As an added bonus a traveling circus would be stopping over near the campus, inviting students and staff alike to attend and engage in some recreation. Little did they know this circus, the circus sombra, was being lead by a dwarf with a large chip on his shoulder. The circus itself was composed of only non-human performers and was comparable to circus de soleil. Humpledinklethorpe, the aforementioned dwarf and ringmaster, simply despised humans in general and hated the idea of humans and magical creatures ever mingling. Consequentially, he looked down on students from mixed parentage such as Holly Carrol (A friend of Brietta’s), and he made no effort to hide his loathing. Believing she was human, Brietta expected to be subject to the same discrimination however but some twist of fate the dwarf arranged for a meeting between the two of them in which he revealed that she was not what she thought she was but was in fact descended from the Sidhe. Brietta didn’t quite believe him at first even though it explained so much in her life. Her natural talent for magic, her strange hair and eye colorations, and her connection to the runes. Humpledinklethorp wanted to use Brietta to help him locate the ley lines, a source of great power, so that he could essentially wipe out all humanity. She agreed to the task if only to find the ley lines for herself then to double cross the dwarf. Humpledinklethorpe became wise to her deception and send two Troll guards to accompany her at all times. This caused some concern among her friends and they naturally became curious as to what was going on. This is about the point where the game ground to a halt and soon closed down.
Pull point: After Brietta struck a deal with Humpledinklethorp, and things started to go sour.
Abilities/Special Powers/Non average skills:
Brietta‘s magical power lies in her runes. When she needs to cast a spell of any kind all she needs to do is concentrate on the situation at hand and cast one of the runes. Each rune has it’s own effects, which leaves plenty of spells at her disposal. The drawback being that this rune casting relies a great deal on chance, and her confidence levels at the time. Being a very unsure person she often casts the wrong rune. She can also use the runes for guidance in rune readings.
[Game Specific]
Character class: Wizard/Witch
Why your character would be that class: While she does need the runes to cast any spells, they are spells.
Powers/skills to be gained by being that class: None, just maintaining older skills.

One moment Brietta had been trying to evade a pair of trolls and the next she’d been faced with a peculiar looking book. She questioned why the book was out in the middle of the woods but it looked important, possibly it possessed some sort of magic of it own. Not having time to properly examine it here she scooped it up and held it to her chest. She hurried off deeper into the woods not sure how close those brutes might be. Thankfully, the trolls didn’t seem to be able to navigate the more densely packed portion of the woods nor did they show any signs of possessing any sort of speed. She smiled to herself, relieved to have left them far be-
--hind?!
Brietta skidded to an abrupt stop, her eyes grew wide with surprise and she let out a little yelp. There, standing before her were more creatures from the circus. Had they also been sent by Humpledinklethorpe? She didn’t plan on sticking around to find out. She turned on her heels to try another direction, finding it already blocked by the two large behemoths from earlier. Not seeing any alternative she tossed the book to the ground and reached for her bag of runes. She closed her eyes to block out everything else as she concentrated on the runes.
“Please, I help me evade these guys..” Brietta softly muttered to herself however before she had time to do anything this strange but bright light flickered all around her. The light was so intense that even with her eyes closed she was aware of it. Cautiously, she slowly opened one eye just to see what the source was only to be met with the sight of the book. There was some sort of image she didn’t really make out before the light seemed to overtake her and everything went black.
When she came to, nothing seemed too out of place save for the fact that she was now lying on the ground. Propping herself she looked around. The book was gone, but so were the circus henchmen. She blinked a few more times and tried to raise herself up to her feet. “W-what was that?”. The longer she was awake the more she began to realize that although she was in a forest, it wasn’t the same forest she’d passed out in. “Could it have been…the runes?” She had remembered asking them for help but not casting one. She reached for the familiar velvet bag only to grab hold of an entirely different material. Glancing down revealed that she was wearing some sort of robe? There was no time to worry about that now. She dropped to the ground and frantically searched the underbrush for her runes. She didn’t draw an easy breath until her fingers brushed against her bag.
“Whew…don’t scare me like that,” She spoke to them as if they could hear her. “Lets see… if we can get back to the university. This might not be the only place that was affected by that strange book..”.

[Since she’d arrived here Brietta had managed to find some sign of civilization it just wasn’t the sort of civilization she expected. She’d found a little town that didn’t look like it belonged in the same era as Polymagic University. Someone had kindly mentioned that one could communicate using the orbs much like they did through the electronic journals back at school… with the exception that the orbs could also transmit video. She found some amusement in how the magical orb had surpassed the electronic technology but it wasn‘t enough to allay the more pressing concerns. She gently plucked it off her necklace and tentatively began her message.]
Pardon me….
[She raised a fist to her lips and looked quite unsure of herself]
.. But could anyone tell me where I am? I.. must have gotten lost.. Somehow.
[Dropping her hand back to her side, she tacked on]
I would appreciate any information. Thank you.

Orb sample:
Thank you.
